On-Farm Research Summer Coordinator

Minnesota (MN) Wheat’s On-Farm Research Network (OFRN) is seeking to fill a position for an On-Farm Research Summer Coordinator.

MN Wheat’s OFRN conducts research on producer-selected topics using producer’s equipment in a large plot environment to improve the management, quality, and profitability of wheat production in MN. Applicants for the On-Farm Research Summer Coordinator position should enjoy communicating with team members and wheat growers as well as professionals in the industry. The applicant will also need to have a background in agriculture and be enthusiastic about research in crop production.

Position Timeline:

  • Up to 6 month duration from April-September – flexible start and end dates

Location: Red Lake Falls, MN

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or higher in Agronomy or related degree
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, and solve day-to-day problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized, with the ability to multi-task
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Passionate about agriculture and research
  • Experience in crop research preferred
  • Experience using GIS software preferred

Responsibilities and Expectations:
The On-Farm Research Summer Coordinator will assist the current Research Coordinators in carrying out the general field operations of the OFRN.

Specifically, the On-Farm Research Summer Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate with growers to set up and harvest plots via phone and text
  • Contact growers to collect field information via phone, text, and email
  • Collect soil, tissue, gas, water, and other in-season field data
  • Record and enter field data and observations into Excel
  • Transport and operate a weigh wagon at harvest to collect yield data and grain samples
  • Write grant proposals and submit progress reports
  • Write media posts and articles related to on-farm research
  • Generate research reports for growers
  • Assist with planning and organizing grower outreach events and meetings

Salary: Hourly wages dependent upon applicant experience and education. Extended hours are required during planting and harvest.

Other Considerations: A full-time, salaried On-Farm Research Coordinator position will become available beginning in the fall of 2019.

About the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council
Established in 1978, the MN Wheat Research and Promotion Council is a non-profit organization that invests wheat check-off dollars for the benefit of wheat producers. The wheat check-off is a 2-cent assessment on all wheat bushels sold and stored in MN. About 50% of the check-off funds are allocated to research, 25% to promotion and 25% to communication of information to growers. The Council currently has six full time employees.

About the On-Farm Research Network
MN Wheat started the OFRN in 2012 with the goal of improving the profitability of wheat production in MN by testing production related research in real world, field scale environments. The Network has experienced tremendous growth over the past five years as interest grows in conducting local, unbiased research. The staff at MN Wheat work diligently to make grower participation in the research process easy and enjoyable.
